The Community Foundation and United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties is proud to announce the creation of the Janice and Donald Doudna Literacy Endowment, a new fund designed to improve literacy outcomes for elementary-aged students across Volusia County.
The endowment, seeded by a generous $60,000 gift from Donald and Janice Doudna, will provide annual grant opportunities to Volusia County Schools and other educational entities to implement evidence-based programs, materials, and teacher-led initiatives that directly enhance reading and writing skills. With a focus on supporting students with the greatest need, the fund aims to strengthen student achievement and promote educational equity throughout the region.
According to the Florida Scorecard, only 57% of third-grade students in Volusia County are currently reading at grade level, leaving thousands of children behind every single year. Third-grade reading proficiency is widely recognized as a key predictor of future academic success and high school graduation.
“We believe that literacy is the gateway to opportunity,” said Janice and Donald Doudna, founding donors of the endowment. “Every child deserves the chance to read confidently and dream boldly. Our hope is that this fund will help unlock potential and change lives for generations to come.”
The endowment will be managed by the Community Foundation and United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties, ensuring that the funds are invested and distributed with long-term impact in mind. Every single year grants will be available.
“This is a transformational gift for our community,” said Courtney Edgcomb, President & CEO of the Community Foundation and United Way. “The Doudnas’ vision and generosity will help us address one of the most critical challenges facing our children. Literacy is more than just a skill—it’s a foundation for success in school, work, and life.”
